Ordnungskonferenz: How Amish Church Rules Are Reviewed and Updated

Many people assume the Amish Ordnung is static and unchanging, frozen in the 17th century. In reality, the Ordnung is a living system that undergoes semi-annual review and vote in every Old Order Amish church district across North America.

The Council Meeting Before Communion (Ordnungskonferenz)

Twice a year—in spring and autumn—church districts hold a special council meeting known as the Ordnungskonferenz prior to participating in Holy Communion. During this meeting, ordained leaders (bishop, ministers, and deacon) present the district’s guidelines for review.

Unanimous Agreement Required

For the district to proceed with communion, every single baptized member must publicly voice agreement with the Ordnung:

  1. Discussion of New Technologies: Members discuss whether new tools (e.g., e-bikes, solar panels, pneumatic tools) align with church values.
  2. Resolving Community Conflicts: Any lingering personal grievances or rule violations must be resolved.
  3. The Vote of Accord: Members affirm their commitment to peace, brotherhood, and obedience to the local Ordnung.

If even one member remains in open disagreement with the Ordnung, communion is postponed until consensus, forgiveness, and unity are achieved.
