While Amish community aid is famous within local church districts, many people do not realize that the Amish also coordinate massive disaster relief efforts for non-Amish communities struck by tornadoes, hurricanes, and floods across the United States.
The Amish Steering Committee
To coordinate national emergency efforts without violating church rules against political lobbying, church districts established the Amish Steering Committee. This liaison body organizes transportation and logistics when natural disasters strike non-Amish regions.
Disaster Response Teams in Action
Following major hurricanes or tornadic destruction, chartered buses carrying hundreds of Amish volunteers arrive in impacted towns. These skilled carpenters and tradesmen work tirelessly alongside organizations like Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS) to rebuild homes, repair roofs, and clear fallen debris for victims without charging a single dollar.
