Which Is the World’s Shortest River? The Geographic Debate Explained

When we think of world rivers, massive waterways like the Amazon or the Nile usually come to mind. But on the opposite end of the spectrum, a fierce geographic rivalry exists over a much smaller title: Which is the world’s shortest river?

As it turns out, answering this simple question is surprisingly complicated. In fact, Guinness World Records officially retired the category in 2006 because local disputes and shifting tides made it almost impossible to declare a permanent winner.

Depending on how water flow and tides are measured, several short waterways claim the crown.

Key Contenders for the Shortest River Title

  • Tamborasi River (Indonesia): Measuring around 20 meters (65.6 feet), this vivid turquoise stream emerges from a cliff spring in Southeast Sulawesi and flows straight into the Flores Sea.
  • Kovasselva River (Norway): Located on Hitra Island, this tiny river also measures approximately 20 meters (65.6 feet), serving as a brief natural outflow connecting Lake Kovassvatnet to a nearby fjord.
  • Reprua River (Georgia): Flowing along the Black Sea coast in Abkhazia, this karst-fed waterway stretches about 27 meters (88.5 feet) and is powered by massive underground spring systems from the Caucasus Mountains.
  • Roe River (United States): Flowing 61 meters (201 feet) from Giant Springs into the Missouri River in Great Falls, Montana, the Roe River was named the shortest river by Guinness in 1989 after a campaign led by local elementary school students.
  • D River (United States): Located in Lincoln City, Oregon, this waterway links Devils Lake to the Pacific Ocean. Depending on whether it is measured at high or low tide, its length varies widely from 37 meters to 134 meters (120 to 440 feet).

Comparison of Top Contenders

River Name Country Length Source to Mouth
Tamborasi River Indonesia ~20 m (65.6 ft) Cliff Spring → Flores Sea
Kovasselva River Norway ~20 m (65.6 ft) Lake → Fjord
Reprua River Georgia ~27 m (88.5 ft) Cave Springs → Black Sea
Roe River USA (Montana) 61 m (201 ft) Giant Springs → Missouri River
D River USA (Oregon) 37–134 m (120–440 ft) Devils Lake → Pacific Ocean

Why Can’t Geographers Agree?

To be classified as a river rather than a creek or spring outlet, a body of water must have a continuous natural flow starting from a distinct source and emptying into another major body of water.

The main challenge comes down to tidal variance. For coastal rivers like the D River, high tides push ocean water far up the riverbed, shortening its measurable length. At low tide, the exposed channel is significantly longer.

Without an official governing body to strictly enforce boundaries, short natural flows like the Tamborasi and Reprua rivers are most commonly recognized by modern geographers as the world’s shortest natural rivers.
