Without police officers, courtrooms, or written legal codes, how does an Amish community maintain obedience to the Ordnung? Enforcing church rules relies entirely on spiritual leadership, peer accountability, and voluntary submission to God’s authority.
The Roles of Ordained Officers
- The Bishop (Völliger Diener): The spiritual head of the district who oversees baptisms, marriages, communion, and final decisions on Ordnung matters.
- Ministers (Diener zum Buch): Preach Sunday sermons and assist the bishop in spiritual counseling.
- The Deacon (Armendiener): Handles church charity, collects mutual aid funds, and acts as the primary liaison who privately visits members violating Ordnung rules.
The Process of Church Reconciliation
When a member breaks a rule—such as secretly buying an automobile or installing forbidden home technology—the deacon and bishop visit privately to offer gentle counsel. If the member repents, they confess before the congregation and are fully restored. Excommunication (shunning) is only applied as a last resort when a member refuses to repent after repeated loving admonitions.
