One of the most noticeable aspects of Old Order Amish culture is their distinctive, uniform clothing. Far from being a mere fashion choice, plain dress is a deliberate expression of spiritual non-conformity, equality, and protection against personal vanity.
Men’s Clothing Regulations
Men wear plain broadcloth trousers held up by suspenders (belts are strictly forbidden as worldly accessories). Jackets and vests use traditional **hooks-and-eyes** rather than flashy metal buttons, a historical tradition stemming from 17th-century European military suits that featured fancy brass buttons.
Women’s Clothing Regulations
Women wear modest, solid-colored dresses (blue, purple, green, or grey) with long sleeves and full skirts. Dresses are fastened with straight pins or simple snaps and covered with a cape and apron. Hair is never cut and is kept neatly tucked inside a white fabric prayer kapp.
