Who Are the Swartzentruber Amish? Most Ultra-Conservative Group

Within the broader Amish world, significant variations exist regarding technology adoption, dress strictness, and lifestyle. At the most traditional end of the spectrum stand the Swartzentruber Amish, widely recognized as one of the most ultra-conservative Old Order subgroups in North America.

The Origins of the Swartzentruber Split (1917)

The Swartzentruber group originated in Holmes County, Ohio, in 1917. Named after Bishop Sam E. Swartzentruber, the division occurred when conservative members broke away from main Old Order districts in response to minor technological relaxations, such as the use of telephone shacks and rubber-tired buggies.

Defining Characteristics of Swartzentruber Life

  • No Indoor Plumbing: Bathrooms and running hot water are forbidden; outhouses and hand-pump wells are strictly maintained.
  • Kerosene Lamps Only: Propane gas-mantle lights and battery systems are rejected in favor of traditional kerosene lanterns.
  • Slower Buggies: Buggies are constructed entirely of wood without windshields, rear mirrors, or battery lights.
  • Stricter Dress: Women wear longer, darker dresses with heavy shawls, while men wear wider straw hat brims.
