An Amish wedding is a massive community celebration, but it looks entirely different from a typical English wedding. There are no diamond rings, tuxedo rentals, elaborate floral arrangements, or professional photographers. Instead, the focus remains entirely on spiritual commitment and community fellowship.
Wedding Months and Days
Weddings take place traditionally in November and December, after the autumn harvest is completed and farm chores lighten. Ceremonies are held exclusively on Tuesdays and Thursdays to allow full days in between for cooking, hall preparation, and cleanup.
The Bride’s Dress and Groom’s Attire
The bride sews her own wedding dress from plain solid-colored fabric—typically blue, purple, or slate gray. There is no white lace, train, or veil. Remarkably, this dress becomes her formal church dress for the rest of her life and serves as her burial dress upon her passing. The groom wears a plain dark suit with a white shirt and brimmed hat.
